AquaBounty CEO Says GMO Salmon to be Approved in 2013, Tell the FDA No Way!

Right now President Obama and the Food and Drug Administration are preparing to approve genetically engineered salmon on the market. We have less than 24 hours to tell the Obama administration that you oppose the approval of the world’s first genetically engineered, transgenic, animal.

Unfortunately, the company behind GMO salmon, AquaBounty Technologies, is already celebrating its pending approval. Two days ago in a Reuters’ story, AqauBounty CEO Ronald Stotish said that he fully expected the FDA to appove AquaBounty’s GMO salmon in 2013.

“We should have approval before the end of the year,” Stotish told Reuters.

Does AquaBounty know something that we don’t? We need to let the FDA know that the American people don’t want to eat GMO salmon – the world’s first mutant animal for human consumption.

Tell President Obama and the FDA to ban the approval of GMO salmon!

Sign the letter to the FDA, President Obama and your members of Congress asking them to Ban GMO salmon. Please add your own comments to make your statement even more powerful.

Dear President Obama; Member of Congress; FDA Commissioner Hamburg,

RE: Docket No. FDA–2011-N-0899 Genetically Engineered Salmon

I urge you to reject the approval of AquaBounty’s genetically engineered salmon.

As the first transgenic species intended for human consumption, AquaBounty’s genetically engineered salmon has failed to meet the most basic requirements of peer-reviewed scientific standards. Unfortunately, the FDA has refused to require rigorous independent scientific testing to adequately protect the safety of human health, wild fish populations and the environment.

It’s unacceptable that consumers continue to be denied their right to know what’s in their food and how it’s produced. Under current U.S. law, genetically engineered salmon would not have to be labeled, therefore leaving consumers in the dark about what they’re eating. At the same time, government scientists have questioned the biosafety protocols provided by AquaBounty and serious questions remain about the safety of genetically engineered animals regarding their impact on human health and the environment.

I urge you to reject that approval of AquaBounty’s GMO salmon to protect consumer health, the safety of our environment and the long-term integrity of our food supply.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]

Monsanto isn’t satisfied with just selling us herbicides and pesticides for coating our crops. Now they’re using a European legal loophole to patent away varieties of cucumber, broccoli, melons and conventional ways of breeding fruits and veggies abroad — forcing growers to pay them for the very seeds they’re planting!

Don’t let Monsanto keep buying up Mother Earth. If we can reach out to countries like Germany, France and the Netherlands where opposition to Monsanto is growing, we can force a vote among the state of the European Patent Convention to stop the biotech giant in its tracks.

We have a chance to stop Monsanto from setting a dangerous precedent and help  fix the European patent laws for good. Will you join us?

PETITION TO EPC MEMBER STATES: We urge you to call on the EPO Administrative Council to close the loopholes that allow corporations like Monsanto to patent plants and conventional breeding methods today.
